On February 16, 2006, the National Family Farm Coalition and the Farmer to Farmer Campaign, together with a number of farm, environmental and consumer groups filed a lawsuit alleging that the USDA's deregulation of GE alfalfa was based on a fatally flawed Environmental Assessment and demanded that the agency's action to permit commercialization of Monsanto's Roundup Ready (RR) Alfalfa be rescinded.
On February 13, 2007, a Federal Court ruled, for the first time ever, that the U.S. Department of Agriculture failed to abide by federal environmental laws when it approved a genetically engineered crop without conducting a full Environment Impact Statement (EIS). Read the press release and the final decision.
To learn more, read the Complaint's Executive Summary, a Factsheet on GE Alfalfa issues prepared by the Western Organization of Resource Councils and the original Press Release coinciding with the lawsuit.
We are also looking for farmers interested in providing statements in support of the lawsuit which focus on problems that they anticipate if GE Alfalfa is planted in their area.
