Katrina Recovery Efforts Must Continue
On Monday August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast Region upsetting the lives and livelihoods of many Federation member families and others in surrounding rural communities, as well as devastating the urban communities of New Orleans, Mobile, Gulfport and Biloxi.
The Rural Coalition and NFFC sent a sign-on letter to Congress on December 12, 2005, which seeks to assure that the needs of hurricane affected farmers, farmworkers and rural communities are addressed in a disaster funding package.
The letter describes the current needs of farmers and farmworkers in the disaster affected areas and also calls for assistance to farmers affected by drought. A list of policy recommendations is shared at the end of the letter. Read letter...

• You can directly help family farmers and rural people who have been displaced by the hurricane and its aftermath -- A long-time member of the National Family Farm Coalition is the Federation of Southern Cooperatives. They are based in Atlanta and have a training center in Epes, Alabama and extensive farmer controlled farmer marketing coops, credit unions, and housing coops in Southern Alabama and Mississippi - regions both heavily hit by Katrina.
