June 01: Family Farmers Question Conclusions of US International Trade Commission (USITC) "Conditions of Competition for Milk Protein Products in the US Market" Report (6.01.04) -The U.S. International Trade Commission's (USITC) Conditions of Competition for Milk Protein Products in the U.S. Market report, released May 18, 2004, reached a questionable conclusion. The Commission found, "The effect of imported milk proteins on farm-level prices depends on whether the market price for SMP (skim milk powder) is at, or above, the support price."

May 27: NFFC Opposes Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) (5.27.04) -The National Family Farm Coalition (NFFC) joined with U.S. and Central American groups Thursday to oppose the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA).

April 27: NFFC Files Petition With FDA: Requests Milk Protein Concentrate (MPC) Meet Safety Regulations (4.27.04) -The National Family Farm Coalition (NFFC) filed a Citizens Petition with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Tuesday, requesting FDA to notify all Federal and State regulators of the necessity to meet Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS) requirements for all uses of Milk Protein Concentrate (MPC) in all food, including non-standardized food.

April 14: 52 Organizations Criticize Animal Identification Proposal: Send Letter with Concerns to US Congress and USDA (4.14.04) -Fifty-two farm, ranch, rural, environmental, faith, and consumer advocacy organizations sent a letter to the U.S. Congress and USDA Secretary Ann Veneman outlining concerns about legislative and regulatory proposals which would fast-track a national animal identification system. The letter cites critical problems found in the U.S. Animal Identification Plan (USAIP), an agribusiness industry proposal to trace livestock from birth to slaughter.

February 20: NFFC Pleased With Precedent-Setting Picket v. IBP Case (2.20.04) -The National Family Farm Coalition (NFFC) is pleased with the precedent-setting Picket v. IBP decision, made by a federal jury on February 17, 2004, which may force IBP (now Tyson Foods, Inc.) to pay 30,000 cattle producers $1.28 billion compensation for manipulating cattle prices.
